Mostly true stories of a Waterberg safari guide
REVIEWS
"
“This book is a broad-range collection of stories from a man who lives with passion and respect for animals, plants, birds, insects and the wild landscapes of Africa. It is an easy to read reminder of how psychologically important these creatures and wild spaces are in our lives.” Ian McCallum
"
"In this book, Bertus has applied his authentic style of storytelling, which emanates from a rich guiding carreer.
The tone of each story is light and engaging, yet remains intelligent, sharing niche knowledge in an easy narrative flow. It’s apparent from page one that the reader is in good hands here, and what follows does not disappoint.

About The Author

Having grown up in a small, dusty Karoo town, I thought, “This is it.” I loved the place then, and I still do. But back then, the Karoo didn’t have many Big Five reserves—and that’s what I wanted to do: become a guide. To make that happen, I needed to go where the Big Five lodges are. That’s how I found myself in the Waterberg.
The plan was simple: stay for two, maybe three years, get something worthwhile on my CV, and then leave. Six months became a year, that became two… and before I knew it, five years had passed. Time just kept rolling, and I lost track of it. I liked it here then. I still do. The Waterberg has fascinated, captured, and intrigued me for over two decades—and it still does.
I’ve been a nature guide in this area for just about twenty-four years, and I’m hoping for another twenty-four! My name is Bertus, and I’m a safari guide, storyteller, author, hobby beekeeper, and imp. Welcome to my site—I hope we can share a few Moments.
