The Full Story
About
Moments has been in the making for twelve years. Though it is not tied to any specific geographical area, most of it took place in the Waterberg. It is a collection of vignettes that are fully capable of transporting a reader from the mere comfort of a familiar old couch, to the true luxury of an African safari.
Stories are told as if to an old friend, and the pages are rich in vivid descriptions of stunning landscapes.
From Where I Stand
As a nature guide in South Africa I have worn many hats - safari guide, ranger, student, and teacher. For over two decades i have immersed myself in the wild. It is a privilege that never feels like work. Mother Nature is my teacher, and her lessons are complex, nuanced, multifaceted. Her answers are not always clear cut, Often they are shaded in grey. Her exams pose questions with answers like "It depends", "maybe", or "all of the above".
A Glimpse Inside
I stopped in the same place — beside the water, beneath the cliff, among the aloes. Stepping down, my eyes were drawn to the ground as if by a magnet.
There they were: the heavy prints of the men, the lighter steps of the women, the small, skipping tracks of the children.
I followed them to the river’s edge. Somewhere along the way, the shapes began to merge.
The wide, round prints of the elephant cows. The neater, narrower tracks of the young'uns. The tiny, short steps of the three calves.
Overlapping.
Mingling.
Indistinguishable now —
becoming one.
